LCES - Instruction During School Closure (3/31)

La Center Elementary – Instruction during School Closure

Update:  March 31, 2020

Dear LCES Families – We hope you and your children are staying well.  The uncertainties of the last two weeks have been challenging for all of us.  We’ve been following State guidelines that initiated with “no school” and moved to “enrichment.”  We are now transitioning to a “modified instructional” approach as a bridge until school reopens.

Starting Monday, April 6, teachers will provide lessons to students via “modified distance learning.” The general guidelines for the lessons are that they be meaningful, accessible, and expected of all students. The objective is to start small with only one lesson per subject per week and gradually increase the demand. Please understand that this is a new system.  We will react to and adjust as we observe the work our students are able to do and master on this new platform.

You can expect:

For the week of April 6th, students will receive one lesson for Math, Reading, and Writing.

a.  We will try to increase the number of lessons and expectations over time, based on how things go.

b.  Teachers will include basic plans designed for family understanding.

c.  Specials teachers will send specific grade-level lessons for their subject areas.

d.  In addition, families can continue using enrichment ideas. Check the district main page for the tab:  “elementary online enrichment resources.”

Suggested schedule to provide for flexibility at home:

Monday Monday-Thursday Thursday/Friday
Receive and begin lessons for Reading, Writing and Math. Includes lessons for Art, Music and PE (K-5) – along with Student Success (K-3). Complete lessons Resource teachers contact Special Education students to provide support/modifications. Teacher contact via email or phone

Special Education students.  Classroom teachers will send lessons to each student. Special education case managers will contact Special Education students to provide support and lesson adaptations.

Students without digital access.  The elementary building will have classified personnel assigned to come in and copy packets of lessons to mail/distribute to families without internet.

Additional Chromebook Distribution. To be announced soon.

Our teachers will work to identify learning objectives that are the most critical for our students, and make those objectives the primary focus.  We recognize that we will only be able to address a portion of the remaining objectives had we remained the classroom. Please contact your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your understanding as our team works together to further your child’s education.  We value and appreciate your support at home.  And we certainly miss sharing smiles, stories, and interacting in person with your children.

Best regards,

Scott Lincoln, 3rd-5th Principal                       Michael Nolan, P-2 Principal

LA CENTER MIDDLE SCHOOL

STUDENT DIGITAL LEARNING OVERVIEW

AS WE BEGIN CONNECTING WITH EACH OTHER ONLINE, HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS SOME OF YOU MIGHT HAVE & OUR ANSWERS FOR YOU…

WHAT’S THE SCHEDULE?

As we begin digital learning, one online lesson from each of your class periods will be posted for you each week, according to this schedule. Open the schedule, and take a look to see which day you should be looking for each class’s lesson. You can do the lessons whenever it is convenient for you and your family. There’s no time schedule. Just be sure to budget about one hour to complete each lesson and its activities. Some classes, like P.E., may ask you to do activities throughout the week.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT TO DO FOR MY LESSON?

Look for information from your teacher. Most of your teachers are using Google Classroom for posting lessons and assignments. Open classroom.google.com and use your lacenterschools.org username and password. Then visit your Google Classroom classes to see what your teachers have shared. Teachers may also be emailing you at your lacenterschools.org email address. To get to your email, go to mail.google.com and use your lacenterschools.org username and password, if prompted. This will then open your Inbox so you can see if you have any new messages.

HOW DO I GET IN TOUCH WITH MY TEACHERS?

If you need help, want feedback, or have a question, reach out to your teachers through Google Classroom, by email, or follow other directions that your teachers have shared with you. You can expect quick responses from your teachers during the online hours listed on the schedule as those are office hours they’ve set aside to help you in real time. Teachers will also reply throughout the week if you reach out to them on other days.

ARE THERE DUE DATES FOR THE ASSIGNMENTS?

Yes…teachers will share with you due dates for your work. Many assignments will be due at least a few days after the lessons are scheduled so that you don’t have to worry if you don’t have a chance to complete the lessons right away. We know that your family’s schedule and technology availability may limit your ability to work on your learning. If possible, though, we encourage you to do your work on the scheduled lesson days so you don’t fall behind.

WHAT IF I’M SICK OR MISS A DUE DATE?

We understand that this could happen to you, Just be in touch with your teachers and work out a time that your work will be completed and turned in. We’re here to support you!

DO WE NEED TO DO THESE LESSONS & ASSIGNMENTS? WILL THEY BE GRADED?

The assignments being shared with you now as part of your online classes are required. That also means teachers will provide feedback or a grade. Make sure you complete and turn these assignments in, even if they’re late.

HOW CAN I STAY ORGANIZED?

Many of you may benefit from keeping a planner, just like you’ve been keeping in school throughout the year. Here’s a link to a planner sheet you can fill out online (make an online copy for yourself in Google Drive) or print out and fill out with pen or a pencil.

La Center High School Grading Guidelines (Updated: 4/28/2020)

2020 COVID-19 Emergency Closure

Due to the emergency closure of schools by Governor Inslee, high school students and middle school students earning high school credits will have two options for how second semester grades will appear on their official transcript for the 2019-2020 school year.

  • Letter Grade (A through D)
    1. Students will receive a traditional letter grade on their transcript.
    2. Letter grades continue to impact cumulative GPAs.
    3. This grade will come from the following three options, whichever is better.
      1. Once the student completes and demonstrates understanding of content and approved by the classroom teacher, the student’s grade as of March 17th or better will be recorded.
      2. The student’s grade at the end of second semester, which is June 19th for students in grades 9-11, and earlier for 12th grade. The seniors last date has yet to be determined but will likely be June 12th.  Students are expected to continue their learning until the end of the school year.
      3. The grade will stand when the student has completed the standards of each class.  This will be shown with the appropriate student work demonstrating understanding of content and approved by the classroom teacher.

  • Incomplete Grade
    1. This option will be applied for students who have an “F” at the end of second semester.
    2. The incomplete will apply to students not completing the learning objectives required by their classroom teachers. Students must continue their learning to the end of the school year.
    3. The incomplete remains on the student’s transcript and can be changed to a letter grade when the course has been completed at some point during their high school years. There are several options for completion (such as retake course, test out, credit recovery, etc.)  Those plans will be developed on an individual student-by-student basis.
    4. Incomplete grades do NOT impact cumulative GPAs positively or negatively. However it is important to note, the student will  NOT receive credit for this class until the Incomplete is resolved.

Seniors, you must also complete all of the graduation requirements which include your Student Led Conference.  Please contact your teacher and/or counselor if you are having difficulties to meet this requirement.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Carol Patton, LCHS Principal

LCHS Grading Update (4/22/20)

LCHS Grading Update 4/22/20

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal announced new rules that Washington state teachers must follow when determining grades for high school course credit.  The new rules stipulate the following:
  • March 17 is the starting point for the new grading system.
  • A student’s baseline letter grade is the letter grade earned by March 17.
  • All students will have the opportunity to improve their baseline letter grades. The final letter grade will not be lower than the baseline letter grade.
  • Teachers will assign A, B, C, or D letter grades or assign an “incomplete”.
  • Students assigned an “incomplete” for a course will be given opportunities to re-engage and meet the learning standards.
  • An “F” may not be given as a letter grade. If a student’s baseline letter grade was an “F” and has not been improved through remote learning, the student may receive a “D” or an “incomplete”.
  • Students may work to improve a letter grade until August 31. On that date, a letter grade will be entered into the official transcript. That letter grade will be no less than the baseline grade of March 17 and will be consistent with the rules prohibiting the use of certain grading marks outlined by OSPI rules issued April 21.
  • The following marks are not allowed: credit/no credit, pass/fail.
Under OSPI’s rulemaking authority, Superintendent Reykdal issued an OSPI Emergency COVID 19 grading practices bulletin outlining a framework and key principles for student learning and grading throughout the remainder of the school facilities closure. The framework enhances statewide consistency while maintaining local flexibility.

Thank you,
Carol Patton

LCHS Student Digital Learning Overview & Item Pickup/Dropoff Information (4/16/20)

April 16, 2020

Dear LCHS Wildcat Families,

We are now into the second week of distance learning, and I want to thank you for your efforts as we work through this new chapter of education that we are doing together.  I am aware that parents/guardians have many questions about the remainder of the school year, grades, and graduation, and we are doing our best to get those questions answered.  Please watch for regular updates from our Superintendent, the LCHS staff, and myself as more information becomes available.

Digital learning devices

Over the past two weeks, the La Center School District has made Chromebooks available to students in grades K-12.  If you are still needing to check a Chromebook out, please go to the district webpage www.lacenterschools.or and under the Online Educational Resources for use during the break click on the yellow Chromebook Request Form.  Complete that form.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:00 – 3:00 in the middle school gym, you can pick up a Chromebook.  We have not yet determined a timeline for the return of those devices but will let you know later this spring.

Grading practices, credit and report cards

The State Board of Education and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction have provided flexibility in grading practices during the emergency school closure.  Schools and students are expected to make a good faith effort in continuing their education via remote learning. The district is also providing Chromebooks to help support students who do not own devices.  Distance learning is available online through their teacher’s webpages and hard copies of assignments will be mailed to you upon request with your teacher. A dropbox is available to return all homework at the front of the high school.  Make sure to have your name and teacher’s name on the homework.

Seniors are required to complete their 24 credits, pass all state assessments or equivalent assessments requirements, complete their High School and Beyond Plan, and present their Student Led Conferences.  The date has been extended to April 23 – May 22 to present your SLC to your teacher and parents. Please work with your assigned teacher to complete the requirements. This is required in order to graduate..

Retrieving personal items from schools

We are going to wait and see if the governor is going to drop the quarantine by May 6th.  If he does, we will set times for students to come to school to retrieve their personal items from classes and lockers. If he does not lift the quarantine ruling, we will collect your items in a bag and provide curbside service to return your belongings.

Fines and other account questions

To pay fines, fees, and lunch accounts, please go to the district website and click on the payment tab.  Follow the directions on that site. For more information, contact Daina in the office between 9:00 – 12:00 or email:  [email protected]    Details about requesting refunds or applying a balance forward to next school year will be available soon.

Yearbooks

The yearbook crew is still working to design the yearbook, in spite of the craziness. Although we usually pass out the yearbooks in June, this year we are planning to have them available for pickup in the middle of August; that way seniors will have the chance to get their yearbook before leaving for their next adventure. We’ll have more specifics for you this summer. Please email Mr. Zylstra ([email protected])  with any yearbook-related questions.

Class of 2020!!!

Senior prom is currently postponed to a later date TBA.  Graduation ceremonies are being evaluated now. State regulations for social distancing and safety protocol will determine the scheduling and format of those events.  We are coming up with many ideas to find a way to celebrate the accomplishments our seniors have made. More details will be provided after May 6th

Although we don’t have all the answers right now, please be assured we are working hard to keep you updated.  We appreciate your patience and understanding. Please continue to focus on learning at home and let us know how we can support you.

Sincerely,

Carol Patton, LCHS Principal

4-20-20 Message regarding student engagement in Lessons from Dave Holmes, Superintendent

Grade 6-12 Students, Parents and Guardians,

Students:

As I write to you today at the beginning of our 3rd week of Modified distance learning, I’m hearing from a number of our teachers that some students are not engaged in the learning opportunities that are being created. As you know from previous emails from the high school, we will be providing letter grades for the work that is completed by students and evaluated by your teacher. At the middle school, we will be issuing pass/fail grades for 4th quarter. Passing grades will only be issued if students are regularly engaged in the work and submitting their best effort that meets a 60% grading evaluation by your teacher. This makes it vitally important that all of you engage in the work to the best of your ability.

I also understand that there is a rumor among some students, that your grade cannot be affected regardless of the effort you apply. This is being connected to a statement the Governor made saying districts are to “due no harm” to student grades during the closure. This is a true statement in reference to not impacting a particular student’s grades if they are not able to access the learning opportunities in an equitable manner. The school is and will work with every student to provide access to learning material and lessons. Regardless of the level of access you may have, it does not relieve you from the obligation to engage, show effort and continue the learning process for the remainder of the school year. In other words, YOU can do harm to your grades if you do not engage with the learning.

I know that many of you may struggle with access to technology, but your teachers are able and willing to provide paper copies of the work and have them delivered to your home.  We have already distributed thousands of packets since the beginning of the closure. What is vitally important is for students to communicate with their teachers on a regular basis. You should ask for any help necessary for you to engage in the learning opportunities provided. We will work just as hard on our end to provide you with what you need as we expect you to work at learning.

In closing, we look forward to seeing all of you when this all ends and hope that you will work hard, stay healthy and keep communicating with your teachers!

Dave Holmes,

Superintendent, La Center School District

4/7/20 School Closure for the Remainder of the Year

April 7, 2020

Subject: Schools Closed for the Remainder of 2019-2020 School Year

Dear Families,

As you may have heard, Governor Inslee has made the decision to close schools for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. This closure is an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keep our community safe and healthy. During this closure extension, all schools in the district will remain closed.

We understand that the continued closure of schools presents many challenges for students and families. It also raises many questions. The information outlined below is what we know now. We will continue to share further guidance as decisions are made and as information becomes available.

  • Distance Learning: Distance learning will continue through the remainder of the school year. We know families have many questions about how this extended closure will affect every area of K-12 education, including students’ grades and GPAs, diplomas and graduations, and students’ overall learning progress. We are working hard to develop and share information that addresses those questions based on guidance from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. We will share updates as soon as we have them and decisions are made based on that
  • Technology: If your child needs a chrome book, you may request one by going to this link on our home page and filling out the form. You will then be contacted by our technology
  • Nutrition Services: We will continue to provide meals to students weekdays 11:30- 1:00 pm outside the middle school
  • High School Seniors: High school seniors will receive support from teachers, counselors and administrators on opportunities to earn credits needed for graduation and postsecondary transitions. We will be working closely with the state’s college system to ensure smooth transitions to the student’s next educational
  • Graduation Ceremonies: In-person graduation ceremonies may change to virtual ceremonies and/or may be A final decision related to graduation ceremonies will be shared by May 6th.
  • School Activities: All school events, including sporting practices and matches, field trips, dances, will be canceled during the extended school closure. We will be engaging with students to come up with creative alternatives to celebrate historically significant milestones. In some cases, special events may be postponed until summer. We will keep students and families updated on these decisions so that you can plan your participation in advance.
  • Summer School: We are awaiting information from Governor Inslee on whether school facilities will be open to provide any type of school over the
  • Personal items, text and workbooks: Each school will be making arrangements for students and families to collect personal items from lockers and desks along with obtaining needed text and workbooks. This information will be shared and arrangements made in the next few

More information can be found on the district website. If you have questions, you may reach out to your building principal or the district office. Please continue to take good care of yourselves and your families. This is a difficult time for all of us, but we will get through it together.

Sincerely,

Dave Holmes, Superintendent La Center School District
