Grading Policy

Course Description

In Tenth Grade English, students will continue to develop and hone their reading and writing skills through a comprehensive study of many works of literature--including novels, plays, short stories, nonfiction, and poetry--and through a number of writing activities. A major goal for the year, of course, is for students to pass both the reading and writing portions of the HSPE, our state exam. We will also focus on reading strategies, vocabulary development, and literary analysis.

Works Studied

  • A selection of short stories
  • A selection of poetry
  • A selection of nonfiction (essay, autobiography, biography, memoir, etc.)
  • Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose
  • Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
  • The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Class Preparation

I expect each student to complete each reading assignment by the due date. No whining, no excuses. The same holds true for all written assignments. I am not a big believer in extra credit; instead, I believe in completing the assigned work promptly and to the best of your ability. It's just that simple.

Necessary Materials

Each day, please bring the following materials to class:
