About NHS

"When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, the hope of NASSP was to create an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. These ideals of scholarship, character, service and leadership remain as relevant today as they were in 1921.

Now, more than 80 years later, the National Honor Society has become a prestigious organization, ranking high among administrators, faculty members, students, parents and residents of the school community. Its reputation for excellence is the result of years of commitment on the part of everyone involved. Through NHS chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment."

Selection of New Members

Candidates for induction into this chapter must:

• have completed at least one semester at La Center High School.
• be members of the sophomore, junior, or senior class.
• have an accumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
• submit a completed application (by the stated due date) to be reviewed by the faculty council.
• score high in scholarship, leadership, service, and character as evaluated by the faculty council.

The applications will be distributed to eligible students at the beginning of the second semester of each school year. It is important that the candidate takes this form seriously, as it will be primary source of information for the faculty council.

Accepted candidates become members at the official induction ceremony which is usually held at the end of April. Candidates who are not accepted for membership will be eligible to apply again the following year, as long as they still meet the academic requirement.

Maintaining Membership

Members of the La Center Chapter of the National Honor Society must:

• maintain an accumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher.
• continue to exhibit excellent scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
• attend all regular meetings.
• pay the chapter dues (not to exceed $10 per year) as voted on by the chapter.
• participate in at least one chapter service project per school year, which must:
  • fulfill a need within the school or community.
  • have the support of the administration and faculty.
  • be appropriate and educationally defensible.
  • not be in conflict with the activities of other school organizations.
  • be well-planned, organized, and executed.
• perform at least one individual service project per school year, which must:
  • reflect the "particular talents and interests" of the member
  • be chosen by the individual member, but reported to the local chapter.
  • be completed at least on month prior to the graduation of the seniors
  • generally not be directly beneficial to the member's family.
  • generally not be done for financial or other compensation.
  
  

Active Transfer Members

Upon receipt of a letter signed by his or her previous principal, an active member of the National Honor Society who transfers to this school will be automatically accepted for the membership requirements of this chapter.
