Lesson 9 - Gases

When you email an assignment please include the Lesson # and the part which you received the question.

(ie) Lesson 1 Part 2

1. Read pages 28-29 in the Chemistry Dictionary and pay particular attention to all of the specific gas laws. Note that gases behave differently in different conditions. Temperature, Pressure, and Volume all have a factor how gases react.

2. Go to: http://www.chemistry.ohio-state.edu/betha/nealGasLaw/index.html and click on the section that says you can play sound (need to have shockwave installed) and complete the mini lecture that takes you through the slides. Email at least 7 specific details for working with gasses. Give characteristics or definitions for what makes a gas.

3. Go to the site: http://www.phy.ntnu.edu.tw/java/idealGas/idealGas.html and enter different numbers in the given boxes. See if making any changes affects the outcome. Give three specific examples how a gas will react in different conditions. List the particle, volume, and pressure along with a description of what is happening.

4. Go to: http://mc2.cchem.berkeley.edu/Java/molecules/index.html and manipulate the numbers to give a different set of conditions. Email what occurs with temperature when you open the barrier for mixing to occur. Explain what a larger mass does to the experiment? Explain what happens to pressure when more atoms are placed in the box?

5. Go to: http://www.jersey.uoregon.edu/vlab/Piston/index.html and work through the three experimental procedures while answering the questions provided for each section. You can email the results back to me after you complete the experiment.

6. Go to: http://www.webct.com/service/ViewContent?contentID=10138 and click on the site for gases. Read about each gas law and keep this information for further study. It will come back again on the final. Bookmark this site.

7. Go to: http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~deep_ocean/index.html?science01.html and use this information to explain why a person might or might not want to become a deep sea diver. Email at least 4 reasons.

8. Go to: http://spikesworld.spike-jamie.com/science/gases_website/index.html and click on any of the activities. Try three of the different activities at home. Report back your findings and if the activities worked.

9. This is the 9th chapter. Remember that 4 of the nine job research assignments must be the extended type. You can use the job from above as one if you wish. There is no quiz for the gases section.
