GRADE: 12                             LESSON: 4

THEME: SETTING GOALS

LESSON GOALS:

  • Help students review their Citizen, Academic and Career goals.
  • Help students combine these into Annual Goals to guide their work for the rest of the year.
  • Review portfolios and add Annual Goals to portfolios.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

  • What do I want to achieve this year?

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Annual Goal Handout (next page of this lesson plan – one copy for each student)
  • Students’ Citizen, Academic and Career goals (from earlier lessons)
  • Portfolio video (from your lead advisor)

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

  1. Discuss students’ Citizenship, Academic and Career Goals. Over the last several lessons, your students have been asked to develop goals for (1) becoming a leader at school and participating in the life of the community; (2) preparing academically for graduation; and (3) developing specific plans to apply to postsecondary institutions. Discuss these goals with them. Have they taken any steps to achieve their goals? What might help them achieve their goals? (5-10 minutes)

  1. Review Goals for Student Lead Conference (SLC). Using the goals you set in the last sessions,  have students look at the rubric for the SLC and relate these goals to their conference. They should be thinking about how they are going to relate these goals in their presentation. (5-10 minutes)

  1. Review portfolios. Have students retrieve their portfolios. Ask them to file their Annual Goals in the Academic Development section of their portfolios. To help students begin preparing their portfolios for their Senior Presentations, have them view the Portfolio video (10-15 minutes)

STUDENT PRODUCTS:

  • Annual Goals. Each student should develop at least three goals for the year. Students should file these goals in their portfolios.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH THIS YEAR?

So far this year, you’ve developed three goals for senior year:

  • Academic – how you will successfully manage your coursework and prepare for graduation
  • Career – how you will set specific plans to apply for postsecondary
  • Citizen – how you will demonstrate leadership at school and in the community

Are your goals realistic? What would help you accomplish your goals this year?

  • Should you change your goals to make them more realistic?
  • Should you set priorities, and organize your goals by how important they are?
  • Should you rewrite your goals – in terms of small steps – that will be easier than one big goal?
  • Can you think of people who can help you succeed?

Think about these questions. Then write at least three “Annual Goals” that you want to accomplish, one each for Academic, Career, and Citizen.
