THEME: GETTING ACQUAINTED

LESSON GOALS:

• Get re-acquainted with the students in your advisory group and meet new students.
• Help students check and update their portfolios.
• Help students ensure they’re on track with course credits and grades.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• 10^th Grade Portfolio Checklist (final page of this lesson plan)
• Grade, credit, or transcript information for each student

CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES:

1. Get re-acquainted. Re-introduce yourself to the students in your advisory group. Introduce any new students. Welcome them back to school. As an icebreaker, you may wish to talk about your summer vacations and plans for the year. Revisit / remind students of “colors” activity.

2. Encourage students to register for the PSAT. The SAT is the main college entrance exam. The PSAT is the SAT’s practice test.Encourage students to learn about the PSAT at www.collegeboard.com and share information with them about how to sign up. (5 minutes)

3. Check credits and grades. Help students check their credits or grades to ensure they are progressing toward graduation. (5 minutes)

4. Update portfolios and activity log. Distribute copies of the 10^th Grade Portfolio Checklist and the activity log. Ask students to use it to prepare their portfolios for this year. (10 minutes)

STUDENT PRODUCTS:

• Updated Portfolio. Each student should update his or her portfolio for 10^th grade checking to make sure all materials are complete and organized from last year. The final grade for the portfolio last year will be pass/fail and entered as the first grade of this year. A pass will only be entered for 100% completion of the portfolio.
