Have you checked your student’s grades lately?

With the adoption of the PowerSchool student information system, everyday is now a progress report for our students.  I also realize that parents are busy and may forget to log on and check as frequently as they intend.  This is simply a reminder that if you haven’t checked your student’s grades in a while, now would be a good time to sit down with them and take a look.  If you need a log-in and password or have forgotten or lost yours please give us a call at the school (263-1700) and we’ll get you on-line right away.  If you don’t have internet access or would just like a hard copy for some other reason,  just give us a call.

Drama Productions:

The La Center High School Drama department will be presenting two productions this year. The first production is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This script is taken from the original story by Victor Hugo and is much more serious than the Disney version. It is an entertaining production with lots of fun, color, terror and emotion. The performances will be January 24th, 25th and 26th at 7:30 pm in the high school commons. Tickets are $5.00 each for any age.

The second production will be the original classic Peter Pan by J, M Barry. This is a fun filled fantasy for the whole family.

Performances will be May 15, 16th and 17th.

Navigation 101, Student-Led Conferences & Graduation Requirements

This year marks the beginning of a student support program that will assist students in making clear & careful plans during high school and for life beyond high school. Our monthly student meetings follow a life skills and planning curriculum aimed to enhance student achievement by helping students regularly evaluate their own skills and interests. Positive outcomes include seeing students take more challenging courses, and more clearly understanding the relationship between school and life after graduation.

Navigation 101 involves parents or guardians by inviting them to annual student-led conferences. All students will be presenting to their parents and navigation teacher about their successes and their plans for the following year. All conferences will be held on THURSDAY, MAY 8th, 2008 for a 20

minute time slot between 12-7 PM. More information will be sent closer to this date.

This is a particularly exciting time for seniors because through their student-led conferences, each student will be meeting state graduation requirements of sharing their culminating project and high school and beyond plan. Please mark your calendars and keep this date open, as this is truly a celebration of each student’s accomplishments and you are the vital audience for your child.

Weather closures and late starts!

As fall moves into winter we are approaching that time of year where icy roads may cause school delays or closures.  As in years past we will have our information on most local radio and TV channels as close to 6 am as possible.  A complete list of channels that carry our information is available on our district website. The address is:

http://www.lacenterschools.org/.  You will find a link right on the front page.  We will also update the info line at 263-1172 as quickly as possible.  In addition to these notification tools we have added a multi-purpose notification system called connect-ed.  This system allows us to send prerecorded phone and e-mail messages to every household in our district in a matter of minutes.  We will be using this system in conjunction with the local media.  For this system to work for you, it is important that you contact us with any changes in your phone numbers or e-mails that have occurred since your last update to our school records or as they occur in the future.

S.A.I.L.S Selling Coffee

(Students Achieving Independent Living Skills)

Mrs. Karukes’ life skills class, S.A.I.L.S. is running an espresso cart at the high school from 7:00 am – 8:15 am and will be seen at upcoming evening events.  The purchase of the cart was made possible by a grant from the La Center Casinos Charitable Fund. Our students are really excited about this opportunity.

The students in the Life Skills Program recently attended the production of Annie at the Washburn Performing Arts Center.  After watching the performance, the students then went out to lunch at a local restaurant.  This was an excellent opportunity for the students to use theater etiquette, table manners, and appropriate communication skills while out in the community.  This was great fun!!
